Some are very well maintained and are still in very good condition. A few of these
shop houses are used exclusively for living only. Some shop houses use the lower floor for
day-to-day business and the upper floor as living area. Since
declaration of Penang as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Cities on 7th
July 2008. Buildings that fulfill certain criteria may be designated as official heritage buildings.
