How to Choose Color Scheme

In interior design, the skill to choose color scheme ranks the highest to give the best results. However, the skill can be learned by following the few guidelines we are giving away to you. No one would accuse you of being color blind if you follow the tips below.

Normally, how do you choose color scheme? Does it depend on your favourite colors? Do all colors must match and within the same family only? Or, you choose a color just because it happens to be in the same hue as your favorite piece of furniture?

Let's say you already have a suite of sofa in the living room. You love the set, you want everything else to revolve around them. Most likely, the fabric has patterns on it. What you need to do is determine the main color on the pattern. From there, pick three matching colors of different level of intensity: the lightest color, the medium color and the strongest (or darkest color).

Take note that white is usually the best color for the ceiling.

Use the lightest color that you choose as the background. So, you would probably paint or paper the walls in this color. Your sofa set would stand out if they are placed with the light color as the background. Then, for other pieces of furnishing, choose the medium color. For example, the drape, rugs and also lampshades. Finally, take the darkest color as the accent. Pick the vase in this color. Using the final dark color on picture frames is also a good idea, or, the wall dado.

Pepper the rest of the room with accessories that match overall theme. Do not over do it though. Mix different textures of fabric, wood or glass materials for a balanced look.

There, you have a perfect color scheme.

That said, deciding on the the colors is a daunting task because of the overwhelming choice that you have to make. Take home the swatch of colors and look at them in different kinds of lighting. Early morning light, intense afternoon light and also incandescent light during the night. On cloudy days and during sunset, the colors would dramatically change too.

Over time, darker color would appear to fade much faster than lighter colors. This is another consideration that you would have to take into account while choosing the color scheme.

Here are some effects of colors can make to your home.

  • Monochromatic colors give a calming effect (think Zen)
  • Soft colors give out a relaxing sensation (think pastel)
  • Strong contrast of primary colors give a stimulating and lively environment (think children's playground)

This guide on how to choose color scheme is very useful for you who would like to try out revamping the look of your home yourself. Picking out furniture and accessories should be done carefully. They are expensive, so might as well get the value for your money in the long run by making the right decision. Take your time. Do not rush. After all, you are going to live with them for quite a long time.
